"Dan really made this tour special for everyone. It's a must see/do. His communication beforehand, his knowledge during the tour - it was the best experience! This really was the highlight of our vacation"

Gulf Islands Cruise
There is no standalone Gulf Islands cruise you can book — and once you see what is actually on offer, that is good news. The passage through Active Pass comes bundled inside the Victoria day trip: a 5.5 km strait between Galiano and Mayne where full-size ferries pass each other in the narrows and orcas, seals and bald eagles work the currents. You do not pay extra for it. It is the scenic middle of a crossing that also buys you Butchart Gardens and an afternoon in Victoria, from $165.

How the Passage Works
Across the Strait of Georgia, into the narrows between two islands, then out to Vancouver Island. About ninety minutes, and the middle third is the part people remember.

Start with the thing nobody says: you cannot book a Gulf Islands cruise. Not as a standalone product, not from Vancouver, not from Victoria. Search for one and you will find day trips to Victoria that mention a “Gulf Islands cruise” in the title, and it takes a while to work out that they all mean the same thing.
They mean the ferry. And that is better than it sounds, for four reasons that are worth knowing before you spend anything.
You are not paying for it. The passage is the scenic middle of a crossing you would be making anyway. It is not a $200 excursion bolted onto your day; it is included in a $165 day trip that also hands you Butchart Gardens and an afternoon in Victoria. Nobody sells the Gulf Islands separately because nobody can charge for them separately.
It runs all year, several times a day. This is a working transport link, not a seasonal excursion that needs a minimum number of passengers and stands down in October. There is a sailing tomorrow, and the one after that.
The boat is large and stable. You are crossing the Strait of Georgia on a full-size vessel with open decks you can walk around, indoor seating when the wind gets old, and food aboard. Small excursion boats are more exciting and much more weather-dependent; on a strait that can turn choppy, that cuts both ways.
It is the same water the wildlife boats charge for. The whale-watching operators running out of Victoria work these currents because the tidal flow through the passes concentrates fish. You are crossing their patch. What you do not get is a naturalist, or a skipper who will divert when something surfaces — which is exactly what you are paying for if you book a whale trip.
The dedicated Gulf Islands cruises that genuinely exist are multi-day expedition voyages — a different product, a different budget, and not what anyone typing “gulf islands cruise” into a search box on a Tuesday is looking for.
The passage is the cruise
The BC Ferries sailing between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay does not run straight across. Its preferred route threads Active Pass, a strait about 5.5 km long separating Galiano Island from Mayne Island, connecting Trincomali Channel to the Strait of Georgia.
It is one of the busiest waterways in the region and it is genuinely narrow. Ferries pass each other inside it. The tidal currents are strong enough to concentrate fish, which concentrates everything that eats fish: orcas, seals, gulls and bald eagles are all regular sightings, and the Georgia Point lighthouse sits on the Mayne Island side.
So the “cruise” being marketed is real. It is simply not a separate boat. It is about twenty minutes of a ninety-minute scheduled sailing, and it is the reason operators mention it at all.
What that means when you book
| What you want | What to actually book |
|---|---|
| To see the islands from the water | A Victoria day trip — the sailing goes through Active Pass |
| To be among the islands, close up | A whale-watching boat out of Victoria, which works these currents |
| To see the archipelago whole | A seaplane crossing |
| To stay on an island | A ferry to Salt Spring, Galiano, Mayne, Pender or Saturna |
The first row is what most people searching for a “Gulf Islands cruise” are after, and the honest answer is that it comes bundled with Victoria and Butchart Gardens because the ferry is going there anyway.
The islands themselves
The Southern Gulf Islands are the group the ferry passes through: Salt Spring, Galiano, Mayne, North and South Pender, and Saturna. Parts of them sit inside Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. They are small, rural and deliberately quiet, and they are a different proposition from a day trip — you go to stay, not to look.
If you are trying to decide whether you want the passage or the islands, that distinction is the one that matters, and it is the one the product titles blur.

- Active Pass — the strait the ferry threads, and why wildlife gathers there
- Gulf Islands or San Juans? — the border confusion, settled
- Salt Spring Island — the largest and the easiest to visit

What Guests Say
"We had a really enjoyable day trip to Butchart Gardens and Victoria which, despite being a long day (8.40 am departure from our Waterfront hotel returning at 10pm), was made effortless and entertaining due to our superb driver/guide Senan. He shared his extensive knowledge of Vancouver and Vancouver Island throughout the day and gave us lots of tips on how to optimise our time on the ferry and at the attractions. His humour throughout the trip certainly made time fly."
"The day was very enjoyable. It was nicely spaced out between time travelling and time at the attractions. The ferry crossing was as enjoyable as the time at Butchart Gardens and in Victoria. Our driver/guide, Dan, was extremely informative. His knowledge was all-encompassing. He was historian, geographer, mathematician, social commentator, comedian all in one! A little time of silence during the journey would have been appreciated, however, as his constant commentary was so much to take in. This is not so much a criticism as a suggestion!"
"Perfect way to visit Vancouver and Butchart garden. The guide, Mark, was funny and interesting."
"Excellent, especially the guide. Everything that was planned was carried out."
"It went quite well, except for the ferry being late. But the trip is very beautiful and worth it. It was a well spent day."

"Amazing and really good commentary by the coach. We learnt a lot about what is happening in Vancouver now, which was very interesting to us."
"A very beautiful experience, in close contact with the wonderful works that nature creates! The city of Victoria is a unique gem!"

Gulf Islands Cruises — Common Questions
Beginning with the one that matters: what can you actually book?
Not as a standalone product — and you are better off for it. What is sold under that name is the BC Ferries sailing between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay, which threads Active Pass between Galiano and Mayne. It is bundled inside Victoria day trips from $165, so the passage costs you nothing extra and comes with Butchart Gardens and an afternoon in Victoria attached. It also runs year-round on a full-size ship rather than seasonally on a small boat. The dedicated Gulf Islands cruises that do exist are multi-day expedition voyages at a different price entirely.
A strait about 5.5 km long separating Galiano Island from Mayne Island, connecting Trincomali Channel to the Strait of Georgia. It is the preferred BC Ferries route between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay, narrow enough that full-size ferries pass each other inside it, and its strong tidal currents concentrate fish — which is why orcas, seals, gulls and bald eagles are regular sightings there.
Salt Spring, Galiano, Mayne, North and South Pender, and Saturna. Salt Spring is much the largest and the easiest to visit; Saturna is the quietest and least served. Parts of several islands lie inside Gulf Islands National Park Reserve.
The border. They are the same archipelago geologically, split between Canada and the United States. The Gulf Islands are in British Columbia and reached from Tsawwassen or Swartz Bay; the San Juans are in Washington and reached from Anacortes or Seattle. If you are already in Vancouver or Victoria the Gulf Islands are closer and involve no border crossing.
No — different country. Gulf Islands National Seashore is in Florida and Mississippi, and there is a Gulf Islands Waterpark in Gulfport, Mississippi. The British Columbia Gulf Islands are in the Salish Sea between Vancouver and Vancouver Island. If a result mentions the Gulf of Mexico or white sand, it is not this place.
Sometimes, and nobody can promise it. Active Pass has a genuine reputation for sightings because the currents concentrate fish, but a scheduled ferry does not divert for wildlife. If seeing whales is the point of your trip, book a whale-watching boat with a naturalist aboard rather than relying on a crossing.
Salt Spring, yes, from Victoria, if the sailings cooperate. From Vancouver it is a long day and the ferry timetable is the binding constraint. A seaplane day trip to Salt Spring exists and is the only version that is comfortable rather than tight. The other islands are better treated as somewhere to stay.
Daylight, and outside if you can bear the wind. The passage through Active Pass is roughly the middle of a ninety-minute sailing and it is short — it is easy to miss it entirely from a cafeteria seat. Summer sailings are frequent; winter timetables are materially lighter, so check the schedule for your date.
